Question

Find the indicated probabilities using the geometric distribution, the Poisson distribution, or the binomial distribution. Then determine if the events are unusual. It convenient, use the appropriate probability table or technology to find the probabilities. Assume the probability that you will make a sale on any given telephone call is 0.15. Find the probability that you (a) make your first sale on the fifth call, (b) make your sale on the first, second, or third call, and (c) do not make a sale on the first three calls. (a) P(make your first sale on the fifth call) = __ (Round to three decimal places as needed.)

Explanation / Answer

a) Probability that the first call is made on the fifth call = Probabiltiy that there were no sales in the first 4 calls * probability that there was a sale on the fifth call

= (1-0.15)4*0.15 = 0.078

Therefore 0.078 is the required probability here.

b) Probability that the sale is made on first , second or third call

= 1- probability that no sale is made on first 3 calls

= 1 - (1-0.15)3 = 0.386

Therefore 0.386 is the required probability here.

c) Probability that no sale is made on first 3 calls

= (1-0.15)3 = 0.614

Therefore 0.614 is the required probability here.
