b. Airports around the world are abbreviated using a three letter code. For example, Dulles is IAD, Reagan airport is DCA and San Francisco is SFO. What is the maximum number of airports that can be labeled this way?

Explanation / Answer

a) the likelihood that at least one of the segments will be on a Star Alliance partner airline

= 1 - when no segment will be on a Star Alliance partner airline

= 1 - (15 -10)/15 * (10 -6)/10

= 1 - 5/15 * 4/10

= 0.866666

b) any of three position can be filled in 26 ways   (as there 26 alphabets)

hence total number of ways = 26^3 =17576
