Question
In the following scenarios, please describe the sample space and also indicate the total number of outcomes (if finite). It is not necessary to use rigorous mathematic notations to describe the sample space, but your answer should be precise and cover all the possible outcomes.
1) A researcher randomly chooses 2 students out of a class of 28 students. The researcher then asked the chosen students if they have ever drunk alcohol before the legal drinking age. The students are instructed to write down YES" or NO" on a piece of paper which will be returned to the researcher. We assume that every student in this class understand this question perfectly well and have a de nite answer to it. However, due to the nature of this question, the students may randomly choose to not tell the truth.
2) To test the e ectiveness of a newly developed treatment method, researchers give the treatment to two volunteers and plan to observe the outcome after 10 years. Here we assume that for each volunteer, there can only be two outcomes: treatment is e ective or the treatment is not e ective. Furthermore, researchers may not be able to observe the outcome after 10 years (the researchers may lose contact with the volunteers, the volunteers may not be able to or choose not to participate in the study, etc).
Explanation / Answer
1) Sample space S = {(YES, YES), (YES,NO) (NO, NO)}
number of outcomes = 3
2) Let E deontes the event that the treatment method is effective, N denote the event that the treatment is not effective and O denote the event that the volunteer cannot be contacted after 10 years.
sample space S = {EN, EO, NO, EE, NN, OO}
Numerous of outcomes = 6
