Explanation / Answer

Answer: a

1. The research is descriptive. Justification: The research is descriptive because in the descriptive research the characteristics of the population under study /research are evaluated. Thus the research in which the characteristics of the target population are evaluated is known as the descriptive research. In this case before start of the training program, the teaching methods of the teachers are evaluated. The teaching methods are the characteristics of the teaching population and these are evaluated before the training program, thus it falls under descriptive research.

2. Possible factors that were controlled are as below : This is the scenario where the Minister of Education sought to establish the effectiveness of a staff development programme on the teaching of English in primary schools. So the possible factors that were controlled were as below

3. Purpose of controlling extraneous factors: The purpose of controlling extraneous factors is to ensure that there are no other factors which are impacting the English learning of the students in the primary school. These extraneous factors will help them to focus on the relevant factors of learning at primary stage to be explored. With this extraneous study, it is clear that the learning is affected by the relevant factors only and not because of the non relevant factors. Thus this study helps in developing a program for the development of the staff so that the effectiveness can be assessed.
