Your company has recently been awarded a large federal government contract. Due to this you are now required to file an employment equity report annually. In talking with some of your HR colleagues in the federal sector, you have learned that the requirement to file an employment equity report annually is a very time consuming task, particularly the undertaking of a “systemic review” of your HR systems. You have also been told that there are few real penalties associated with not doing the review. Given that you are swamped with work and other important commitments you are wondering if winning the contract was such a good thing. In order to be an effective HR professional, what would you recommend to do and why?

To be one of the effective HR proffesional, one has to realize that he really is an HR person. One who is good at handling people, one who is good at helping other employees, one who is a people's person are some of the reasons to get started with. A person who has a vision set for himself to be an HR professional will definitely strive towards achieiving it, He has to have a clear vision and the path to reach the vision. He can set his path by his own or he can take cues from the senior subordinates who have been in the business for longer time.
Since, HR is one of the domains that aligns the goals of an organization and supports the employees in achieving the goals, every employee in the HR department shoud clearly know their part in supporting the department to achieve the goal. This brings a person to become an effective HR professional a bit closer.
Communication also plays one of the important roles in making an individual into an effective HR professional. An effective HR professional is the one who can communicate well with colleagues and superiors to make things done. This would have played an important role in the above mentioned scenario when the task of systematic review of HR system could have been assigned to someone who is good at documenting such issues.
Being flexible also plays an important role in determining the success of an employee, he has to be flexible enough to adjust to the challenges faced in the organization. He should be adaptable enough and a wise change master to inculcate the change in himself and his subordinates.
