Question
On a weekly basis, I work with all types of teams, who are not playing well together. So, we discuss the stages of team development, and based on the complexity of issues, I partner with leaders to incorporate some type of activities to strengthen the teams. So, for your assignment this week, we will take a deep dive into the stages.
How many of you remember the movie with Denzel Washington, Remember the Titans? This movie was based on true events. In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria, Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The European American head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach from North Carolina. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team.
For this assignment, view the video clip and be prepared to discuss the stages of team development - Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, Adjourning (from Chapter 7 in the textbook).
What is happening at each stage?
If you were the coach/leader/HR Director for this team (or a similar team), what type of leadership activities would you incorporate at the different stages? For example, I'd recommend everyone on the team complete an assessment tool at the storming stage, in order to learn the different styles and strengths.

Explanation / Answer
Remember The Titan's is a splendid movie. It demonstrates how a leader was able to eliminate the differences and racism between the team because “Football knows no race. He believed that the players can’t be trained to be soft, to feel sorry for themselves, and made them train harder.
We can identify that group forms and develops over time in the following distinctive stages
Stage 1 : Forming
In the forming stage, we bring the team together. Being a racially diverse team, Coach Boone sees that the footballers grouped themselves based on race when boarding the team buses. Coach Boone sees this as an opportunity to bring the team together. He asks all the players to get down from the bus. He brings all of the defensive players in one bus and offensive players on the other bus ensuring that they sit with someone of a different race. He asks two members from each group to stay together in a single room for the entire duration of the camp. This helps teambuilding and knowing about others.Well,it could break some ice-breakers between the people. During the forming stage, it is the leader’s responsibility to make clear the direction and roles of the members.
Stage 2: Storming
The Storming stage is the time where most of the conflicts arise and will be most challenging for the team. There will be many conflicts within the team because of different opinions being expressed by team members. Its really doesn’t sound great but its helpful for the team go through this stage. It opens up a communication channel among team members to say with honesty what needs to be said. For example, Campbell confronts Bertie on why as leader, he had not said anything about his white players not blocking for the black quarterback named Rev. “I’m supposed to wear myself out for the team? What team? Nah, nah what I’m going to do is look out for myself and get mine,” says Campbell. Bertier replies, “See that is the worse attitude I have ever heard,” to which Campbell responds:” Attitude reflects leadership, captain”. This confrontation questioned the leadership of bertier
After this confrontation, Bertier starts playing the role as Captain when he confronts his white teammates for their lack of efforts to give the best to play the game. This moment Bertier gains respect among whole team as a Captain.
Stage 3: Norming
It Signifies the stage where the team begins to come together. They appreciate other and trust is developed among the team members .The leader sets a goal for the team to achieve and defines the role for each team member. Each team member looks upon themselves the unity of the group remains intact.
Stage 4: Performing :
In this stage, the team performs with exceeding their own expectations on each day. They motivate each other to give their best. Each of the team player recognizes all other team member’s strength and weak points. During this stage, there is a sense of pride among the team members. There is openness in the team .We also notice that Coach Boone and Coach Yoast also put aside their pride away and help each other to maintain their perfect record and win the championship.
Stage 5: Adjourning
This stage embarks the time when the team has performed its best and are satisfied with every other team member’s performance. All the goals have been accomplished by the team. The team praises the performance of good players. They share the reward and success among themselves. The players bid farewell to each other and disperse.
