Question

If it is known that a randomly selected customer will go to the bakery department, what is the probability that this customer will also goes to the dairy department? (3)

(A) 0.8056 (B) 0.1944 (C) 0.1471 (D) 0.8529 (E) none of the above

After some observations, the marketing research team of a chain of retail grocery stores found that 68% of all the customers go to the bakery department, 72% of all the customers go the dairy department and 58% ofall the customers go to both the bakery and the dairy departments. Use B to denote the event that a randomly selected customer goes to the bakery department and D to denote the event that a randomly selected customer goes to the dairy department. Thus the information given above can be written as P(B) 0.68, P(D) 0.72 and P(BOD)-0.58

Explanation / Answer

We need to find that P(D|B)= P(B and D)/P(B)=0.58/0.68 =0.8529, Thus option D is correct (note that B and D is same as B intersection D)
