Students who score 1280 or higher on the SAT (out of 1600) are eligible for an honors society. The ACT test composite score has a mean of 20.8 and a standard deviation of 4.8

What do the middle 40% of students score on the SAT?

. Jack scored a 1000 on the SAT, Jill scored 19.7 on the ACT. Who had the higher score relative to the respective test? Why? Explain how you came to this answer. Show any software output (and/or hand calculations) used.

Explanation / Answer

For SAT, Mean is 1020 and SD is 194 , Jack scored 1000, this means z for him is (x-mean)/sd which is (1000-1020)/194= -0.1031

For ACT, Mean is 20.8 and SD is 4.8, Jill scored 19.7, z is (19.7-20.8)/4.8 =-0.229

Thus, Jack has higher score since it's score is more standard deviations away form the mean
