19. Do you think global warming will have an impact on you during your lifetime? A CBS News/New York Times poll of 1000 adults in the United States asked this question (CBS News website, December 2014). Consider the responses by age groups shown below Age 18-29 134 131 Response 30+ 293 432 Yes Unsure a. What is the probability that a respondent 18-29 years of age thinks that global warm b. What is the probability that a respondent 30+ years of age thinks that global warming c. For a randomly selected respondent, what is the probability that a respondernt d. Based on the survey results, does there appear to be a difference between ages 18-29 ing will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime? will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime? answers yes? and 30+ regarding concern over global warming?

Explanation / Answer

a) Probability that a respondent aged 18-29 who thinks that global warming will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime is computed as:

= Number of people aged 18-29 who thinks that global warming will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime / Total number of 18-29 people

= 131 / ( 134 + 131 + 2)

= 0.4906

Therefore 0.4906 is the required probability here.

b) Probability that a respondent aged 30 + who thinks that global warming will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime is computed as:

= Number of people aged 30+ who thinks that global warming will not pose a serious threat during his/her lifetime / Total number of 30+ people

= 432 / ( 432 + 293 + 8)

= 0.5894

Therefore 0.5894 is the required probability here.

c) Probability that a respondent answered yes

= Total number of people who answered yes / Total number of people

= ( 134 + 293 ) / 1000

= 0.427

Therefore 0.427 is the required probability here.

d) Yes there appears to be a difference in their concerns regarding global warming because we saw in the parts a) and b) there are 49.06% of 18-29 people who think that global warming will not be a serious threat while in the 30+ aged people, about 58.94% of the people think that global warming wont be a serious threat.
