Favors Oppose Total Male 40 20 60 Female 30 10 40 Total 70 30 100Explanation / Answer
From the table, total number of lawyers = 100
a) i. The probablity that a lawyer is a female and opposes capital punishment
= 10/100 = 0.1.
ii. The probability that the lawyer favors capital punishment = 70/100 = 0.7.
iii. The probability that the lawyer favors capital punishment given that she is female
= 30/40 = 0.75
b) The probability that a lawyer is female = 40/100 = 0.4
The probability that the lawyer is a female given that she favors capital punishment
= 30/70 = 0.43
Since the probability that a lawyer is female is not the same as that as the probability that the lawyer is a female given that she favors capital punishment, the two events are not independent.
