Question

Researchers investigated whether insomnia is related to education status. Adults living in a certain region were selected to participate in the study using a random-digit telephone dialing procedure. In addition to insomnia status (normal sleeper or chronic insomnia), the researchers classified each participant into one of four education categories (college graduate, some college, high school graduate, and high school dropout). One dependent variable of interest to the researchers was a quantitative measure of daytime functioning called the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). The data were analyzed as a 2×4 factorial experiment, with Insomnia status and Education level as the two factors. Complete parts a through e below.

a. Determine the number of treatments for this study. List them.

How many treatments are there for this study?

There are

nothing

treatments.

List the treatments. Select all that apply.

A.

Normal sleeper, high school dropout

B.

Normal sleeper, high school graduate

C.

Chronic insomnia, high FSS

D.

Normal sleeper, college graduate

E.

Chronic insomnia, college graduate

F.

Chronic insomnia, high school graduate

G.

Chronic insomnia, low FSS

H.

Chronic insomnia, high school dropout

I.

Normal sleeper, low FSS

J.

Normal sleeper, high FSS

K.

Normal sleeper, some college

L.

Chronic insomnia, some college

c. The researchers discovered that the sample mean for FSS for people with insomnia was greater than the sample mean FSS for normal sleepers, and this difference was statistically significant. Practically interpret this result.

Choose the correct answer below.

A.

Regardless of sleep patterns, people with a college education have a higher FSS.

B.

As the level of education increases, people with insomnia have a higher FSS.

C.

Regardless of education level, people with insomnia have a higher FSS.

D.

For people with a college education, people with insomnia have a higher FSS.

d. The researchers reported that the main effect of Education was statistically significant. Practically interpret this result.

Choose the correct answer below.

A.

The FSS of a person can be predicted based upon his/her education level.

B.

The FSS of a person does not change depending on his/her education level.

C.

There is an interaction effect between education level and insomnia status.

D.

The FSS of a person varies depending on his/her education level.

e. Refer to part d. In a follow-up analysis, the sample mean FSS values for the four Education levels were compareed using Tukey's method
