Question
3. A particular nuclear plant releases a detectable amount of radioactive gasses twice a month on the average.al) Find the probability that there will be at most four such emissions during a month. b.) What is the expected number of emissions over a three month period? c.) If, in fact, 12 or more emissions are detected during a three month period. Do you think that there is a reason to suspect the reported average figure of twice a month? Explain on the basis of probability. A random telephone poll is conducted to ascertain public opinion concerning the construction of a nuclear powe nmmunity, Assume that there are 150,000 numbers listed for private individuals and that 90,000 tn the number of negative responses obtained in 15 callExplanation / Answer
Solution:-
= 2
a) The probability that there would be atmost four such emmisions during a month is 0.947.
= 2,
By using poisons distribution:-
P(x; ) = (e-) (x) / x!
P(x < 4) = P(x = 0) + P(x = 1) + P(x = 2) + P(x = 3) + P(x = 4)
P(x < 4) = 0.947
b) The expected number of emmision over a three month is
= 2 × 3
= 6
c) There is probability of 0.019 that 12 or more emmmision are detected during a three moth period.
= 6
By using poisons distribution:-
P(x; ) = (e-) (x) / x!
P(x > 12) = 0.019
