Question

2. Categorize the following situations as either discrete or continuous (or a combination of both). In each situation, specify the objective of developing a simulation model a) Calls come into a computer support center randomly over time. Each call is handled in a first come first served order. If the problem cannot be solved on the first contact, follow up contacts are scheduled. b) A computer manufacturer supports on-line sales. A customer configures and places their order via a secured web portal. c) The population of a native species of fish is being threatened by an invasive predator that was accidentally introduced from another country. We are interested in understanding the dynamic interactions between the populations of the two species. The progress of a viral infection in the human body is being modeled so as to understand the time that it takes to cause specific symptoms. d)

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Fisrt , we need to understand the meaning of Discrete and continuous data.

Continuous : A set of data is said to be continuous if we can take any value( including fractions ).

Ex.Measuring devices of temperature,Speed etc..(They will show in fractions also).

Discrete : A set of data is said to be discrete if the values beloning to set are discrete and distinct.

Ex.Counting things...like No.of students in your class.

(a)

It is a continous situation as in Continuous is information canbe measured on a continuum or scale. Continuous situational data can have almost any numeric value and can be meaningfully subdivided in to finer and finer increments, depending upon the precision of the measurement system.

(b)

Discreate situation as in discrete situation information can be categorized in to a classification. Discrete situational data is based on counts. Only a finite number of values is possible, and the values cannot be subdivided meaningfully.

Here, we need of simulation model. Thousands of random samples that follow a particular distribution, calculating the test statistics from each sample can be evaluated and after tabulating the distribution of these test statistics, the signifuicance level and power of the procedure can be investigated.

(c)

Both discrete and continuous. Simulations are required to know

(d)

Both discrete and continuous. Simulations is needed for better understanding of the evolutionary effect of the medicine on the human body.
