The National Endowment for the Humanities sponsors summer institutes to improve the skills of high school teachers of foreign languages. One such institute hosted 20 French teachers for 4 weeks. At the beginning of the period, the teachers were given the Modern Language Associations listening test of understanding of spoken French. After 4 weeks of immersion in French in and out of class, the listening test was given again. (The actual French spoken in the two tests was different, so that simply taking the first test should not improve the score on the second test.) Data below shows the improvements for the 20 teachers in the study: French.class

Explanation / Answer

Complete R code :

>library(asbio) # loading 'asbio' package containing the one-sample z-test function

>french.class=c(2,0,6,6,3,3,2,3,-6,6,6,6,3,0,1,1,0,2,3,3) # assigning the values

>one.sample.z(french.class,null.mu=0,sigma=2.9,alt="greater") #one-sample z-test

One sample z-test
z* P-value
3.85529 5.779635e-05

Since p-value is very small, the null hypothesis of zero improvement is rejected and we conclude that there is significant improvement.

Here, the assumption is that the data comes from a normal distribution.
