Question

Referring again to the Mariana Trench, because of its great depth it is in absolute darkness. For a long time it was thought that life couldn't exist there except for microscopic or invertebrate organisms. The pressure at the bottom of the trench is so great that it is thought that calcium compounds that make up bone can only exist in solution. A December 2014 exploration by scientists at the University of Hawaii revealed some surprises (i.e. Nature saying Hah! Shows what you know, ignorant human!). Check out this short article, including the videos. What questions arise in your mind as you read/ view these? http://www.schmidtocean.org/story/show/3584

Explanation / Answer

Questions that come to my mind

(1) At such a deep sea level, what would be the available oxygen in water

(2) It will be very difficult for the light to reach these levels so there is no chance of photosynthesis. This means that if at all a fish is found at that height how is it able to survive i.e., on what is it surviging ?

(3) What would be the pressure at such a low level

(4) If the pressure is extremely large, then what should be the blood pressure of such beings which exist at that depth

(5) In the absence of light how are the fish eyes working ? on what wavelengths these eyes work ?

(6) Do they have any infrared sensing capability ?
