Name & Surname ID#: Section: Questions: 1) [51 What would you expect for the variation of potential V with radius r for a ditferent radial direction? Measure a few points to check out your prediction. 2) [51 Based on your measurements of electrical potential, what must be the direction of the electric field? What do the equipotentials look like? 3) [5] If the power supply voltag field pattern change? How about the potentials? e in the experiment were doubled, how would the 4) [5] Why does not current flow along equipotential lines? Conclusion: [15]

Explanation / Answer

1).As you know that potential V is a scalar quantity, which is defined as(the amount of work needed to bring a unit positive charge from a given or choosen reference to a specific point or the point where we want to calculate the potential, inside a field without producing any acceleration). It only depends on the distances between the two points not on the direction.so whenever you measure the potential V at the same radial distance r,for two different radial directions you will get the same value of potential.

2).If all the points of a surface are at the same potential, the surface is called an equipotential surface.work done in moving a charge between any two points on an equipotential surface is 0.So electric field E must be perpendicular to the surface at every point.Always keep in mind that field lines and equipotential surfaces are alwaye mutually perpendicular.equipotenial surfaces are differnt for different charges.e.g-for a point charge equipotential surfaces are a family of concentric spheres where as for a line charge it is family of concentric cylinders.

3).Field pattern doesn't depend on the power supply voltage.power supply may effect the strength or the intensity of the field but not the pattern.Field lines depend on the geometry of charges, for example-whether it is a point charge or a line charge or a surface charge.these all configurations of charges have different field lines and accordingly different equipotential surfaces.

4).To get a current charges should flow through the wires and charges flow due to potential difference in the wires. As we know that equipotential surface has the same potential and there is no potential difference. So the current doesn't flow. Moreover the workdone due to field on the equipotential surface is also 0 because field and surface are mutually perpendicular.
