Question

6) There are two multiple slit experiments set up, with the each set of slits the same distance from its screen. There is a double slit apparatus, and the separation between the two slits is 10,000 nm and it uses light of 500 nm wavelength. There is a 5 slit apparatus, and the distance between adjacent slits is 10,000 nm - and it uses the same 500 nm wavelength light. (Assume these are both "ideal" multiple slit configurations the width of an individual slit is VERY small.) a) compare the two interference patterns seen on the screens. how do the spacings of the "bright spots" relate to each other (is one pattern wider spaced than the other)- explain b) compare the two interference patterns seen on the screens.. how does the intensity of the "bright spots relate to each other (does one pattern have a higher intensity than the other, and if so, by how much)- explain c) compare the two interference patterns seen on the screens..how do the widths of the "bright spots" relate to each other (are the "brights spots" more narrow in one of the patterns)- explain.

Explanation / Answer

when comparing the diffraction pattern due to double slit and 5 slit experiment we see the following differences

a. spacing comparision

for same wavelength and same adjacent slit distance

the distance between the maximas remains the same

b. intensity comparision

for same wavleenght and same adjacent slit distance

the inteinsity of the maximas in double slit if I, then intensity of maximas in 5 slit experiment is given by 25/4 I

so intensity of maxima peaks increases

c. width of bright spots

as number of slits increaes, the with of bright spots decreases with bright spots being seperated by less intense fringes (dark and light pattern)
