10. You have been informed that the CEO of your food processing company has recognized the labour union newly formed by the workers. However, no one in the Senior Leadership Team knows what to expect next from the new labour union and its members.
a. Outline and describe for the Senior Leadership Team the collective bargaining process, making sure to emphasize the specific roles and responsibilities of each party.
b. Suggest a timeline and protocol for the Senior Leadership Team to follow when bargaining with the union. Be specific about items the team should seek agreement on from the labour union at the beginning of the process
c. How can Contingency Theory explain how the formation of a worker’s union can be turned into an advantage for the employer?
Explanation / Answer
a. A worker union in an organization is quite a common phenomenon and they acts as the employee advocate in the organization so that the employee are in no way deprived of their rights and expectations. A union is generally considered as something that pose hindrance to the organization's independence to work but if the senior management and the union is in a collective bargaining process and understanding, then the establishment and presence of an union may actually be helpful and beneficial for the organization. The senior leadership team and the union in this context should be at a proper bargaining process and this process actually should work for the betterment of the organization. The terma and conditions should be defined and segregated, as follows:
1. The union should focus on only the work aspect and should let the management do the managing aspects.
2. The management should be effective in assisting the employees and think of making the process convenient for them.
3. The union should also think about the organization and its betterment
4. Requests or proposals should be made and it will go through a structured way or process and teh approval or denial will depend on that.
b. The Senior leadership team should always consider the presence and importance of the Union and any agreement or business proposal should be prepared with atleast some consent or approval from the union because it is the workers who will be actually doing the ground work in the process. I believe that the union should be involved in the process of launching a product or service or during the planning process of any business agreement and the union should be allocated a time frame within which they can go through the process and suggest or recommend any inputs or ideas that could be beneficial for the organization and if there is any request that the union needs to make then they can do that which the management can look after and if there is anything that they can do needs to be done.
c. Contingency theory states that each and every internal process or unit is dependent for the betterment of the organization and that is possible only if the management is effective to work or drive a union towards the betterment of the organization and that is possible. The management needs to understand that why this union is formed what is the expectation of the employees and what the management needs to do in order to ensure that the employees are satisfied if that is implemented, then the union may actually work in favor of the organization and make the organization a better place to work.
