Question 2.5 PRACTICAL JOKES ARE NOT GOOD) A two way classification of record of deaths due to a disease, shocks, heart attacks and without heart attacks in a hospital is given inHeart Attacks the Table. Andy's uncle Mr. Bob had a Deaths Disease Shocks disease and the doctor had recommended him Without Heart Attacks 45 a bed rest. Andy was interested to play with his uncle, so he wants to make him wakeup. In such an interest, Andy explodes a bomb near his sleeping chair. Unfortunately, his uncle Mr. Bob died. Doctor's postmortem report shows that Mr. Bob died due to a heart attack Fig. 2.5. Andy and his uncle ( a ) What is the conditional probability he died due to shock created by Andy's bomb? ( b ) Are the events "Shocks" and “Heart Attacks" independent? Justify your answer.Explanation / Answer
Here DGC = 445
(a) Here uncle died because of heartattack
so we have to find the probability that uncle died from bomb shock given he had a heart attack from the shock.
Pr(Andy bomb's shock) = 10/ (10 + DGC) = 10/ (10 + 445) = 0.022
(b) Here events ' shocks' and ' Heart attacks' would be independent if
Pr(Shocks) * Pr(Heart attacks) = Pr(shochks and Heartattacks)
Pr(Shocks) * Pr(Heart attacks) = 15/ (60 + DGC) * (10 + DGC)/ (60 + DGC) = (15/505) * (455/505) = 0.02676
Pr(shochks and Heartattacks) = 10/505 = 0.0198
so these two are not equal so events are not independent.
