I'm doing a research topic paper in my stats class and need some help. I'm wanting to do mine over sports performance. Here is my situation.- Is there a relationship between [physical measurement] and [sports performance] . The [physical measurement] could be hand span, length of inseam, length of foot, etc. The [sports performance] could be free throw percentage, time for 50m sprint, etc.
How would I do a null and alternative hypothesis. And I need help using what statistical method would I use. Mann Whitney U??? Also, I need help on what I am testing for (like a treatment effect? And any relationship between the two days sets. I'm not actually doing this experiment, just need help kinda getting this paper going and any input would be great :)

Explanation / Answer
As much as I am understanding,your input variables are continuous,hence you dont need to do any treatment effect test.Because,treatment effect comes into action,when there are factors that cant be measured,like a factor may be different types of sports,like football or cricket which cant be measured,but here variable under considerations are coninuous,hence treatment effect will not work here.
Again,Mnn Whitney statistics is used to test whether two distributions are centred at same locations or not.So,for this, you dont have such kind of problem,because the problem is not related to location but dependency between them.
What I can suggest is to build a model(linear or quadratic or any non linear,depending on the sctterplot) of any sports performance parameter on physical measurement variable and check whether the model is significant,you can also use several response model test,so tht you can build up a relationship between the variables.If the suitable assumptions of normality does not hold,you can work with ridge regression or lasso regression to find the effective model. So,when it comes to find a relationship,building a model depending on the scatterplot is the best option.
