(3 pts.) 4. For each of the following residual plots, indicate whether the graph: 1) violates the linearity assumption, 2) violates the constant variance assumption, or 3) has no violations Note that a particular graph may violate more than one assumption 0 2 2 (1 pt.) a) (1 pt.) b) 35 8 3e 6 O 25 4 e 2 29 28 4e 60 80 100 129 148 168 180 15 2 25 54455e Predicted Predicted (1 pt.) c) 1.0- O0.5 15 2e 25 35 4 45 Predicted Additional Problems: 12.97 2 Practice Problems: 12.67 (p. 611)Explanation / Answer
In plot(a), as the residual values keep on increasing, as the
predicted values increase. So it violates the constant variance
assumption.
In plot(b), the residual plot exhibits a pattern like parabola,
so some higher order terms is required in order to explain the
variation. Hence, the residual plot violates the linearity
assumption.
Plot(c) is completely random, it is distributed randomly, so
linearity assumption is satisfied. Also, it is distributed
uniformly above and below the x-axis. So, the constant
variance assumption is also satisfied. Hence, there is no
violation in this plot.
