Question
Awareness of cultural diversity is crucial for effective cross-cultural communication. The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. When people understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems, then communication is more effective and miscommunication can be averted.
Can you share an experience in life or at work where you encountered a problem with communication due to cultural differences? Did nonverbal cues play a role in the situation? Lastly, how can organizations focus on and improve cross-cultural communication?
Explanation / Answer
Yes, I have faced problem with commuication dueto cultural differences in life:
When I was staying in a hostel for my education purpose. The hostel belonged to a different community than that I belonged.
they spoke different language than me. I couldnt understand their language neither did they. Language was the biggest barrier and was overcome by learning the language slowly interpreting the words, trying to speak the same language, understanding the habbitsof the people.
And yes nonverbal clues worked even as the cultures are different , every one can relate to sign language because many of the things are relatabe.
The cross cultural communication can be improved in the organisations by making corss cultural teams, celebrating various festivals as they are celebrated by the communities, imbibe the various cultural values in the designs of the organisations workplace.
