Question
In a study, 15 children were given blocks and told to build a tower as tall as possible. The time (in seconds) they took to finish the tower is recorded. After a month, the same 15 children repeated the same exercise. The difference in time (first experiment minus second experiment) has a (sample) mean of 22.27 and a sample standard deviation of 32.77. We want to test the claim that there is a difference between the 2 times.
(a) What is the null hypothesis H0and the alternative hypothesis H1?
(b) Using = 0.01, will you rejectH0? Justify your answer by using a p-value.
**Which test/formula is used for this statistic when the only thing that is given are the differences in mean and standard deviation?
Explanation / Answer
Below are the null and alternate hypothesis
H0: mu = 0
H1: mu not equals to 0
Test statistics, t = (22.27 - 0)/(32.77/sqrt(15)) = 2.632021334
p-value = 0.0197086
As p-value is greater than the significance level of 0.01, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
This means there is not significant evidence to conclude that there is difference in the mean.
