All hypothesis tests should include hypotheses, test statistic, p-value or critical value, decision and conclusion.
Q.1. (Sales and Median Age)
The following table shows the total sales for 10 high-end supermarket stores. In addition to the population of the towns in which the stores are located, supermarket executives believe their store products appeal to a younger generation. Here are the data for the total annual Sales and Median Age of residents of the town:

a) Obtain a scatterplot and examine/describe the general relationship between Sales and Median Age of the town residents.
b) Do you think a linear model is appropriate?
c) The marketing manager fit the regression line. What is the equation of that line?
d) Using this model, predict the annual sales of a supermarket of this type in a town whose median age is 32 years.
e) From a “Regression Analysis” report obtained from Minitab, do you have any reservations about the prediction you found in (d)? Explain.
f) Using this model, predict the annual sales of a supermarket of this type in a town whose median age is 26 years.
g) Do you have any reservations about the prediction you found in (f)? Explain.

Sales ($M) Median Age 5.54 39.5 10.7 34.5 10.532 30.4 5.995 36.2 5.09 40.8 3.995 41.5 2.774 34.7 4.828 41.4 5.511 38 4.195 40

Explanation / Answer

a). Ans: The scatter plot of the given data is as follow in which y denotes sales and x denotes median age.

From the above scatter plot we see that as x increases y decreased, also the plot has downward trend so we conclude that there is negative relation between sales(y) and Median age(x).

b). And: This is approperate model as there is relation in general between sales and median age.

c). Ans: The regression line Sales (y) on median Age (x) is given by
          y = 24.1 - 0.482 x

d). Ans: The annual sales (y) of a supermarket of this type in a town whose median age (x) is 32 years is given by

         y = 24.1 - 0.482(32)= 8.676.

f). Ans: The annual sales of a supermarket of this type in a town whose median age is 26 yearsis given by

y = 24.1 - 0.482(26)= 11.568.
