Question

A group of researchers are interested in testing the hypothesis that overall body strength in elderly women determines the number and severity of accidents these women have. They gather data from 100 elderly women and over the last three years they measure lower and upper-body strength as well as any bodily injuries. They create an overall injury index. The research team constructs a multiple linear regression model looking at the relationship between overall injury index and the following variables: strength in quadriceps, gluteus/hamstrings. Abdominals/lower back, arms/shoulders, and grip strength. The following is the SPSS output displaying the results of their analysis

A) Write out the model in symbols. Round to 3 decimal places.

B) Write the results in APA style

Explanation / Answer

(A) injury = 260.393 + 0.628*quads - 3.245*gluts - 0.563*abdoms - 1.130*arms + 0.794*grip

(B)

Response Variable Significant variables Adjusted R-square Injury increase per unit increase in X-var

Injury   quads 0.138   0.628

gluts -3.245

abdoms -0.563

arms -1.130

grip   0.794
