Question

Refer to the two box plots to the right showing starting salaries for first year graduates in agriculture and engineering. (a) Fill in the blank: Of the 540 engineering graduates, at most -had a starting salary greater than $53,000. (b) Fill in the blank: If there were 249 agriculture graduates with starting salaries of $50,000 or less, the total number of agriculture graduates is approximately Agriculture salaries x 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 65 70 Starting salary (in thousands) (a) Of the 540 engineering graduates, at most 405 had a starting salary greater than $53,000. (Type an integer or a decimal.) (b) If there were 249 agriculture graduates with starting salaries of $50,000 or less, the total number of agriculture graduates is approximately 332 Type an integer or a decimal.)

Explanation / Answer

Part a

We are given n = 540

We have to find number of engineering graduates who had salary greater than $53000.

From given box plot,

Q3 = $53,000

This means 75% engineering graduates have salary less than $53000.

This means 25% engineering graduates have salary greater than $53000.

Required number of engineering students = 540*25% = 540*0.25 = 135

Required answer = 135

Part b

We are given n = 249

From given box plot, we are given

Q3 = $50,000

This means 75% agriculture graduates have salary less than $50,000.

Required number of agriculture graduates = 249*0.75 = 186.75

Required answer = 187 approximately
