Question

In 2011, the average yield (bushels per acre) of organic wheat farms was lower than that of conventional farms (McBride and Greene, 2015). Suppose Diego, an agricultural researcher, wanted to determine if the wheat yield in 2015 showed the same trend. He selected 40 organic wheat farms and 40 conventional wheat farms at random and acquired data on the 2015 wheat yield for each farm. The table presents his summary data.

Diego's data set did not contain any outliers, so he ran a two-sample ttest for independent samples with unknown population standard deviations at a significance level of =0.05. The table shows the results of his test.

Complete the following sentences to state Diego's decision and conclusion.

McBride, William; Greene, Catherine. Despite Profit Potential, Organic Field Crop Acreage Remains Low, 2015. Explanation / Answer

Here as the p- value is less than the recommended significance level alpha = 0.05, so we shall reject the null hypothesis and can conclude that average yield for organic farms are less than the average yield for conventional farms. There is enough evidence to accept the alternative hypothesis.
