Question
The mean annual tuition and fees for a sample of 12 private colleges was $39,200 with a standard deviation of $4300. A dotplot shows that it is reasonable to assume that the population is approximately normal. You wish to test whether the mean tuition and fees for private colleges is different from $35,500. i). State the null and alternate hypotheses. i). Compute the value of the test statistic and state the number of degrees of freedom. iii). State a conclusion regarding Ho-Use the = 0.05 level of significance.Explanation / Answer
i) Below are the null and alternate hypothesis
H0: mu = 35500
H1: mu not equals to 35500
ii)
test statistics, t = (39200 - 35500)/(4300/sqrt(12)) = 2.9807
df = 12 - 1 = 11
iii)
p-value = 0.0125
As p-value is less than 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis. This means there is significant evidence to conclude that there is difference in mean tuition and fees for private colleges is different from 35500
