A study was designed to determine whether there is an association between the occurrence of iron deficiency in women and their level of education. Women were divided into two groups: those with less than or equal to 12 years of education and those with greater than 12 years of education. They also were divided into deficient or normal based on the established clinical normal range.
Explanation / Answer
This is a case of a chi square test where the null and the alternate hypothesis are given as:
Null: The 2 variables are not associated and are independent
Alternate: The 2 variables here are associated and are not independent.
The chi square test is to be used here because both the variables here are categorical . Note that the education number of years is although numerical is divided into 2 categories and therefore it is categorical.
This is a one tailed test, as the chi square test for association is always a one sided test.
