Question
please evaluate and respond to the following observation of leader behaviors as they relate to overall followership, offered by a classmate from another course section:
"It starts with a follower trusting the leader and taking ownership of their leader’s vision as if it were their own."
How does this trust building take shape? What helps or hinders trust building? What experiences do you have that inform the dialogue in this regard?
What does 'taking ownership of the leaders vision' mean? Individually? Organizationally?
Explanation / Answer
This talks about leadership with reference to followers. It talks about leadership based on the interactions and relationships between leadership and followers. Examples of such theories include the path-goal theory of leadership and situational leadership. It does not examine leader in isolation, but rather in the context of a group
Situational leadership talks about four leadership styles (Telling, Selling, Participating and Delegating) that can be adopted based on four maturity levels and four competence levels of followers
Four maturity levels
Four competence levels
The givens statement shows the leadership is about following a delegating style, a style that is used when the followers have a high level of competence, commitment, and ability. As per the statement, the follower takes the ownership of the leader’s vision – as per situational leadership theory the followers need to have sufficient level of competence (d4) especially if they were to take responsibility. They should have a maturity level of M4.the leadership style more apt for D4 and M4 is delegating. The given statement shows the follower trusts the leader’s decisions which means the statement does not mean telling style- where the leader sets the direction and followers just follow it whether they like it or not and whether they trust it or not.
The con of the given statement is that it tends to deliver the meaning that is leadership does not exist without such highly committed and competent followers. Leadership can still do well for followers with less experience – a, ‘telling’, style of leadership( as mentioned in situational leadership theory) would still do fine
Building trust-
Trust happens based on Based on confidence in audience perceptions of leader’s expertise, intentions, capabilities, and experience. Trust building takes place through leader’s actions and communication. Trust is enhanced by the persistence of the leaders’ action, integrity in action and results achieved. The leader creates a connection that raises the motivation the followers
Based on my experience in start-ups, I find that tend to follow the leader (usual founders in start-ups) based on the trust on his visions, leaders capabilities, leaders previous results and his experience. Even though we may not have a feel for the business nor an ability to capture the potential in a leaders’ vision, the trust we lay upon the leader based on the factors mentioned above led us to be committed to the vision.
. Taking ownership means the following
This happens when there is trust in the vision and confidence in their own abilities
Taking ownership, I believe, is about both individual and organization. The follower takes ownership as an individual as well as being part of a group- the organization
