Question

I am so stuck on 2 questions for an assignment for a research methods class. Please help me with these two questions:

4. Back to the Profanity data! You have reason to believe that whether a participant hears a message or reads a message may affect the degree to which the source is perceived to be credible. Your hypothesis states: H1: Reading a message will result in significantly higher ratings of speaker competence than hearing the message in spoken form. As such, you run a t-test and get the output below. Using this output, describe what has occurred and whether the hypothesis has been supported. Be sure to write it in academic format.

5. For some reason, it seems as though you have been hearing Carly Simon’s “You’re so vain” everywhere you go. Now it is stuck in your head for what feels like life. However, this song may have sparked an ingenious eureka moment! As you reflect on your profanity data, you start to wonder if there could be a relationship between perceptions of source physical attractiveness and perceptions of their argument quality. You know this doesn’t seem logical, but you can’t help but wonder. Your hypothesis states: H1: There will be a significant positive relationship between physical attractiveness and perceived argument quality. As such, you run a correlation and get the output below. Using this output, describe what has occurred and whether the hypothesis has been supported.

Explanation / Answer

4.

H0: Reading a message will result in same ratings of speaker competence as hearing the message in spoken form.

H1: Reading a message will result in significantly higher ratings of speaker competence than hearing the message in spoken form.

Based on the output, when equality of variances are assumed and equality of variances are not assumed, p-value for two tail tests are 0.028 and 0.035. P-values for right tail tests are 0.028/2 = 0.014 and 0.035/2 = 0.0175. In both cases, p-values is less than the significance level of 0.05, so, we reject the null hypothesis and support the alternative hypothesis.

Conclusion - At 95% confidence interval (0.05 significance level), there is siginificant evidence that reading a message will result in significantly higher ratings of speaker competence than hearing the message in spoken form.

5.

H0: There is no relationship between physical attractiveness and perceived argument quality.

H1: There will be a significant positive relationship between physical attractiveness and perceived argument quality.

Based on the output, the p-value for two-tail test is 0.000. P-values for right tail tests is 0.000/2 = 0.000. So, p-value is less than the significance level of 0.01, so, we reject the null hypothesis and support the alternative hypothesis.

Conclusion - At 99% confidence interval (0.01 significance level), there is significant positive relationship between physical attractiveness and perceived argument quality.
