Question
Highway construction adds exactly 5 minutes to my commute on MONDAYS ONLY. What is the likelihood that if I depart at 8:00am, I will arrive at work by 8:40am? Say something about whether you can compute it. If so, how would you compute it? On average it takes 30 minutes door to door 5 days of the week to communte to work. What is the new standard deviation, and is the distribution normal? I received an answer from Chegg of 0.6915 (additional 5 minute commute EVERY DAY). Is the answer for MONDAYS ONLY also 0.6915? I recalculated the average (mean) as 31= (30 minutes x4 days) + 35 minutes (Monday) divided by 5 days = 31 (mean). What is the standard deviation if the average changes to 35 minutes every day? Thank you.
Explanation / Answer
a) before 8:40am? = 0.8413
b) after 9:00am? =0.0013
part 2; =.6915
On average it takes 30 minutes door to door 5 days of the week to communte to work with a standard deviation of 10 minutes. Assuming communte time is normally distributed. I recalculated the average (mean) as 31= (30 minutes x4 days) + 35 minutes (Monday) divided by 5 days = 31 (mean), P(Z<.9) and 0.81594.
