Question

5. For the 36 students in the sample in Question 4, the mean height equals 68 inches and the standard deviation equals 4.44 inches a. Estimate, with 95 percent confidence, the mean height for all students enrolled in BMGT 230, this semester b. How would the width of the interval in Part a change if the standard deviation equaled 3.33 inches, holding all other values/ideas constant? c. How would the width of the interval in Part a change if the mean equaled 71 inches, holding all other values/ideas constant?

Explanation / Answer

a) here std error =std deviation/(n)1/2 =4.44/(36)1/2 =0.74

for 95% confidence ; z score =1.96

hence margin of error =z*std error =1.4504

hence 95% confidence for mean height =population mean -/+margin of error =68 -/+ 1.4504 =66.5504 to 69.4504

b) as std deviation reduces so does the std error will reduce which will reduce width of confidence interval

c) for mean value does not effect margin of error whcih decides width of confidence interval; therefore width will reamin same/
