Sec. 8.1 Problem 4 12pts]. For (a) and (b). classify the two samples as Independent or Dependent. Explain your reasoning. (a). [1pt] Sample 1: The IQ scores of 60 females Sample 2: The IQ scores of 60 males (b). [1pt] Sample 1: The commute times of 10 workers when they use their own vehicles. Sample 2: The commute times of the same 10 workers when they use public transportation 8 9 10 11 12 2 13 14 15 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 27 28 29 30 31 30 31 Alt

Explanation / Answer

a) This is a case of independent events. The IQ score of the males should not have any effect on the IQ scores of females and similarly, the IQ scores of females should not have an effect on the IQ scores of males. Therefore the two events should be independent here.

b) This is a case of dependent events. As it is specifically given here that we are looking at the same 10 workers commute time, therefore commute time of the 10 workers when they use their own vehicle would clearly be more if the commute time by public transport is more. This can be due to a greater distance.
