Question

A student is entering school from another state. I need to know which math class to place her in. We normally use SAT scores (mean=500 and standard deviation=100.) The rules used for placement are: 700-800 Calculus, 500-699 Trig, 300-499 Geometry, 100-299 Algebra. However, the student did not take the SAT, she took the AAT. Scores for the AAT have a mean of 80 and a standard deviation of 8. The student received a raw score of 84 on the math protion of the AAT. How do I convert her score to a metric so to compare with the SAT scores? And then decide which class she should be placed in?

Explanation / Answer

Z = (X - mean)/standard deviation

Z for raw score of 84 on AAT = (84 - 80) , 8 = 0.5

Raw score of SAT for Z score of 0.5 = 500 + 0.5 * 100 = 550 (ans)

So, she should be placed in Trigonometry class.
