Question
1. (based on 6.52) Write a short paragraph explaining what is wrong in each situation and why it is wrong.
(a) A researcher tests the following null hypothesis: H0: Xbar=23 .
(b) A random sample of size 30 is taken from a population that is assumed to have a standard deviation of 5. The standard deviation of the sample mean is 5/30.
(c) A study with Xbar= 45 reports statistical significance for Ha:>50.
(d) A researcher tests the hypothesis Ho:=350 and concludes that the population mean is equal to 350.
Explanation / Answer
(a) The null hypothesis cannot have the sample mean in it. It should be H0: = 23
(b) The standard deviation of the sample mean should be 5/Sqrt(30) also known as the standard error.
(c) If the sample mean is lesser than the population mean for a right tailed test (Ha:>50), it can never be statistically significant.
(d) The conclusion should not address the population mean. it should indicate the sample mean.
