Question
Assume that a hospital has a single-phase, multiple-channel waiting line. There are 2 employees, 10 customers currently in line, and new patients arrive at the rate of approximately 40 patients per hour. Calculate the average wait time.
I am having a hard time understanding how the book came up with these answers. need it worked out so I understand the process
Using the calculation of img, average wait time is 15 minutes: (10 ÷ 40) × 60 = 15 minutes. Note that this is not the same as the total wait in the system (Wq).
This is all the information that was provided
Explanation / Answer
Given,
There are 2 employees, 10 customers currently in line
New patients arrive at the rate of 40 patients per hour.
Solution:
First we should calculate the inter arrival time of the customers.
This can be done by 1/arrival rate i.e., 1/40 = 0.025 hr/patient
Already there are 10 customers in the line. So 10*0.025 = 0.25 hr
Average wait time = 0.25hr = 0.25 * 60 minutes = 15 minutes
Average wait time = 15 minutes
