c. What influence did Max Weber’s scientific management have on organizational theory, and how is his thinking still relevant and applicable in today’s management world? Provide at least one example.
Explanation / Answer
part A
Fredrick Taylor developed the scientific management whose main objective to improve economic efficiency and labour productivity. It applies scientific methods to improve working conditions and make labour more productive. With the Taylor theory the first thing to be done with task is to break down it in a process and find the best ways to perform the task. Workers are then assigned the break down tasks according to their ability. Workers are motivated by rewarding for good and punishing for bad quality if work so performed is bad. This was the first time when organization looked at worker and provide him with good working conditions to get the best out him.
Max Webber expanded on the Taylors theory and emphasized on the need of bringing in processes and standard set of rules to bring in more stability and uniformity in the organization. This was more process based and improved worker efficiency by looking at cause and effect of workers issue.
Part B
Taylor and Weber thinking has never been more relevant. with increasing industry output and pressure on cost of production to increase workers productivity, these two theories have more impact in terms of time and motion study and improving worker efficiency. for example in any company, where processes and worker involvement can be mapped and non-productive processes can be reduced to least. Also, giving workers breaks in between will also help in improving productivity,
Part C
Mark Weber suggestion to make organizations more proces oriented is still relevant. Consider an ecom company, where delivering right product in least possible time is the utmost priority, Untill processes are not in place there is ambiguity in the organisation, it will be difficult for any one person to deliver the right product int he least possible time. You also need to keep your workers motivated so that they can do their demanding job with better perks.
