Question

Using the writing rules of English, create a marratve lessay that addresses the following questions about a power sapply. Don't guess and no bullet points-writing is your creative expression of what you know about an engineering problem or issue you need to communicate with your colleagues. Your score is based on how well you write the narrative and tochnical accuracy. Do not exceed the length of this paper. What is the fundamental purpose of a power supply? How does the input and output of the power supply behave (in the time domain)? Are there any constraints (what is a constraint?) andior limitations on the R and C of the ilter section? What? Yes, what is the purpose and behavice of each of the resistor and capacitor of a power supply? Don't answer 'No'- that is guessing

Explanation / Answer

               Narrative essay on power supply:

In our Home, the power which comes from a wall outlet is a high voltage AC, Here AC denotes an alternating. This kind of power is good for operating machines such as electric water pump, electric heater, water geysers etc., those electrical devices can withstand that much of power directly. But electronic appliances such as computer, LCD TV, Cell Phone chargers, Laptop chargers etc. which are made up of electronic chips and other components, requires a much lesser DC Voltage to work.

So, High Voltage AC power from our wall outlet must be stepped down to a proper DC voltage before they are fed to various parts of our electronic devices. Fundamental purpose of a power supply is to convert this High Voltage AC Power to a Proper DC Voltage level.

Inputs which is fed to the power supply are time varying AC i.e., Polarity of their voltage changes periodically 60 times per second and it is a sine wave whereas the output of a power supply is a pure DC Voltage whose voltage level remains constant all the time and hence there is no polarity change in DC voltage.

There are various constraints of power supply such as Space constraints, power dissipation and efficiency constraints, cost constraints. Keeping in mind of these constraint we design our power supply for example if we use LDO (Linear – Dropout) Regulators, then it will be fine in terms of space constraints but it will be very inefficient as it dissipates excessive power. So, during designing the power supply we try to balance these constraints as much as possible.

A very Basic power supply is made up of a Step-down transformer, a rectifier circuit made up of diodes in bridge configuration as input section, and in the output section there is a filter made up of parallel combination of a capacitor and a resistor. This circuit acts as a low pass filter and this filter is also known as the RC filter. Now when the AC supply is applied at the input of the power supply, then the step-down transformer steps down the power to a low voltage AC, then this low AC voltage is applied to the rectifier circuit which converts it from AC voltage to a fluctuating DC voltage and this fluctuating DC Voltage is applied to the RC filter, which then filter out all the fluctuation in this fluctuating DC with the help the RC Filter.

RC filters have several advantages such as small size and multiple stages of RC filter can be used. But in RC filter, the use of resistor provides a limitation as well. This limitation is resistor takes away some output power and hence some output power is wasted in the resistance of RC Filter.
