Question

Q3) A school teacher wants to survey students at her elementary school. She surveys 2 students from each grade level. What type of sampling technique she is using? Q4) Which Method? The mathematics department at a university wishes to administer a survey to a sample of students taking college algebra. The department is offering 32 sections of college algebra, similar in class size and makeup, with a total of 1280 students. They would like the sample size to be roughly 10% of the population of college algebra students this semester. How might the department obtain a simple random sample? A stratified sample? A cluster sample? Which method do you think is best in this situation? Explain your answer!

Explanation / Answer

Q3) If we take random sample from each strata ( or each groups) then the sampling technique is called as stratified sampling. So answer is stratified sampling.

Q4) Simple random sampling: First list all the students from 1 to 1280 and then take 128 students from the list randomly.

Stratified sampling: First make homogeneous strata ( groups) and then select appropriate random sample from each strata such that the sample size is approximate equal to 128.

Cluster sampling: First make clusters and then select some of the clusters from all the clusters randomly. The sample is all the students in the selected clusters( Note that the sample size closed to 128)

Stratified sampling is the best sampling technique because it cover all the sections and so the variance is less than other sampling technique.
