Question

Name the sampling method being used in each of the scenarios given below explain your reasoning. and merchant. These bottles were shipped together in 50 boxes with 20 bottles in each box. The merchant wishes to confirm the content of the bottles is 3 ounces. How w sample this shipment of cologne to find out what 1. A shipment of 1000 three-ounce bottles of cologne has been received by a ould you the average content actually is? A faculty member wishes to take a sample from the 1600 students in the school. Each student has an ID number. A list of all identification numbers is available. The faculty member selects an ID number at random from among the first 16 identification numbers on the list and then every sixteenth number from then on. (What is the size of the sample?) 2. A faculty member wishes to take a sample from the 1600 students in the school. The faculty member decides to interview the first 100 students entering class on Monday. What kind of sample is this? Explain why it will or will not be a good way to sample 3. this group

Explanation / Answer

1)

I used the concept of stratified sampling. here I randomly pick 5 boxes with are my stratas. And each of these box (strata), I randomly select 3 bottles and calculate their content. I can calculate the average content by summing the value of all contents divided by the total number of bottles in the sample. here the sample size is 5*3 = 15

2)

I use the concept of systematic random sampling. in this type of Sampling first unit is selected randomly and then every unit is selected on the basis of pre determined pattern. Here sample size is:

(1600-16)/16 + 1 = 99+1 = 100

3)

This is a type of convenience sampling. this sample is not a good representative of the population as the sample is biased. hence I can say it is not a good way to sample.
