Is this reasonable? (b) Find the probability of the occurrence of one or the other or both during any minute. For rare events, i.e. events with small probabilities of occurrence, the engineer frequently assumes: P(A UB)~P(A) P(B) Is this reasonable? (c) If the events in consecutive minutes are mutually independent, what is the probability that there will be no moderate earthquake in a year at this location? In 10 years?

a) P( joint occurence) = P(A)*P(B) = 10^-5 * 10^-8 = 10^-13

b)P( either) = 1- P( none) = 1- ( 1-10^-5)(1-10^-8) = 0.00001000999 which is approx equal to P(A)+P(B) . Hence, the engineer is correct

c) P( No earthquake in 10 years ) = (1- 10^-8 )^ (365*10*24*60) = 0.9487
