Question
If prevalence = proportion of people in a population who have a disease or attribute at a specicified point in time or
over a specific period of time, what would the denominator be? I don't understand why we aren't given total number of
children (not just number of children WITH autism).
Also, if the formula is : all new and preexisting cases during a given time period / population during the same time period x 10n, what is the n? (1,000? 100,000?)
Problem #8 Calculate category statistics: Autism is a disability that is characterized by a severely decreased ability to engage in communication and social interaction. A study was undertaken to establish the prevalence of Autism in a community. Data from this study are reported below: Children Diagnosed With Autism per Age Group Age Group 3-5 6-10 Children With Autism 193,479 175,417 a. Calculate the prevalence rate of autism for the two age categories. b. Calculate the prevalence to a rate per 1,000.Explanation / Answer
here prevalence(%) =100*number of children with autism/number of children measured
so denominator will be number of children measured or surveyed.
prevalance=(all new and preexisting cases during a given time period / population during the same time period )x 10n, what is the n
if prevalence is per 10 thousand then n=1000
if prevalence is per 10 lakh then n=100,000
in the problem#8, if number of children surveyed is n then
(a)
prevalnce in age group of 3-5 is given as 193479/n
prevalnce in age group of 6-10 is given as 175417/n
(b)
prevalnce rate per 1000 in age group of 3-5 is given as 1000*193479/n
prevalnce rate per 1000 in age group of 6-10 is given as 1000*175417/n
