Question 3 -Congratulations! You have been chosen as the anthropometric design consultant for the first all- female mission to Mars! Everything about the space capsule has been tailored to US female anthropometric dimensions. You have been tasked with designing an airlock portal for spacewalks and extravehicular sorties. The portal should be wide enough such that two female astronauts can exit the spacecraft simultaneously without touching shoulders (the widest part of the body). The space suits adds 6" to a female astronaut's total shoulder breadth. Also, for safety, there should be at least a 6" gap between the shoulders of each astronaut and an additional 6" clearance between each astronaut's outside suit shoulder and the outside edge of the airlock. At a minimum, how wide should the door opening be so that these criteria are met 95% of the time? Question 4- Discussion Question. You are designing a form fitting glove of various sizes. There will be a separate line of gloves for males and females as well as various size ranges for each including Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. These gloves are intended to be very form fitting and to not restrict grip diameter or digit/hand spread and shouldn't restrict movement and gripping function of the hand and wrist in any way. The material is no-slip, textured polyester. What dimensions are important for glove fit? When testing function, what additional dimensions should be tested? How would you approach designing the sizes for each gender?Explanation / Answer
3. If the mean shoulder widths of the female astronauts is Xbar then the width of the portal given the other specifications should ideally be
2Xbar+6+6+6+6+6
To ensure that this criteria is met 95% of the times we need to find a right sided confidence interval. The significat value for 0.05 right tailed probability value is 1.64.
So, the required width would be 2Xbar+6*1.64 inches = (2Xbar+9.84)"
4. The dimensions that would be important for the glove would be the width of the palm for each of the sizes and the length of the figures.
Additionaly, we must also consider the wrist diameter and finger dimensions for the two genders as women tend to have slender and longer fingers than men.
While designing the sizes for each gender we can take samples of the palm sizes and finger lengths for the two genders then get a rough estimate of the sizes that needs to be made and classify the dimensions as Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large.
