So, the variance r = x/n enables us to estimate the perccentage of students attending college in their home town.

For example:

Assume

n = total number of students who attend the college = 500

So,

r = 200/500 = 0.4

So, we can conclude that 40 % of students of the college are those who attend college in their home town.
