Question

2 points In a large country in 2014, there were around 2 million deaths recorded out of which about 615,000 of these were owing to heart disease (true numbers for the US for the year 2014; the rest of this problem, the numbers are made up). Amongst the total deaths, there were about 230,000 of these individuals had parents who had heart disease out of which 115,000 of these deaths were owing to heart disease. Suppose you pick a person at random. Further suppose you know that this person's parents did not suffer from heart disease. Find the probability that this person died of heart disease related issued. Round to four decimal points.

Explanation / Answer

number of people whose parents did not suffer from heart disease =2000000-230000=1770000

number of people died of heart attack given parents did not suffer from heart disease =615000-115000=500000

hence probability that people died of heart attack given parents did not suffer from heart disease

=500000/1770000 =0.2825
