Question

Exercise: In Brain and Behavior evolution (April 2000), Zoologists conducted a study of the feeding behavior of black-bream fish. The Zoologists recorded the number of aggressive strikes of black-bream fish feeding at the bottom of an aquarium in the 10-minute period following the addition of food. The next table lists the weekly number of strikes and age of the fish (in days). Assume that the line would be appropriate to fit this data. Explanation / Answer

The regression line Y on X is

Y = a +bX

Where a is known as y-intercept and b is known as slope of the line Y on X.

y = number of strikes

X =age of the fish in days

Given the regression line

Yhat = 176 - 0.82 X

from the fitted equation of regression line y-intercept = 176

i.e .If age of the fish is zero the regression equation predicts that the number of strikes are 176.

From the regression equation the slope of the fitted line is -0.85 it is negative. It indicates that there is negative correlation between number of strikes and age of fish.
