COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS Math 140: Introductory Statistics Instructor: Julio C. Herrera Exam 5 January 30, 2018 Problem 5: (JSF) program, operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, is a global defense program that involves acquisition of military fighter jets for participating alled com An article in the Air and Space Power Journal (March-April 2014) reported on the estimat annual cost of adding a military aircraft to the JSF program. The Excel file F3 year of initial operation and cost (in millions of dollars) for 12 JSF military aircraft mo For this problem, let y = estimated annual cost and x-year of initial operation for each aircraft model. ed 5 lists the a. Fit the simple linear regression model, y a+b, to the data. b. If possible, give a practical interpretation of the y-intercept of the line c. Give an estimate of the increase in the cost of adding a military aircraft to the JSF program each year auval cost be374 addra an se by '1.sbu en tar

Explanation / Answer

The data is not given in the question . However you can simply answer this in excel using the slope and the intercept funciton in excel

use
SLOPE on the X and Y data
INTERCEPT on the X and Y data

so, say, the equation becomes

Y = 12*X + 5

where 12 is slope and 5 is intercept

Y = cost and X = year

so intercept is when X = 0 , which means year is zero , hence it is not practiacally possible to give a interpretation of the intercept

now the slope is 12
this means that the cost of adding a aircaft model would increase by 12 units for every unit increase in the value of the year
