Question

In a recent research of an Introductory Statistics class of a University, students were asked if they are going to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election on November 8, 2016. Out of 170 students 90 are going to vote in teh upcoming Presidential Election.

A) Give a point estimate of the true proportion of all students at the University who are planning to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election.

B) Construct a 95% confidence interval around the proportion in part A. Interpret the confidence interval.

C) Can the researcher claim that majority of the students are going to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election? Use the confidence interval from part B. Explain why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

a) here point estimate phat =90/170=0.5294

b) for sample size n=170;

therefore std error =(p(1-p)/n)1/2 =0.0383

for 95% confidence level ; critical value of z =1.96

therefore  95% confidence interval around the proportion =sample proportion -/+ z*Std error

=0.4544 to 0.6044

abvoe interval gives 95% confiednce to contain true proportion of students who are going to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election on November 8, 2016.

c)

as above interval contian values below 0.5 proportion also therefore we can not conclude that  majority of the students are going to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election
