Answer to #11)

Explanation as to why those are the answers.

We use the data from the National Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey (link) which was administr ered to a sample of 5360 kindergarten children in academic year 1998-1999. These children were then tracked from grade 1 through 8 and for each year we observe a reading and math score on a standardized test. We consider the following variables MAGE: age of the mother at child's birth (years) * AGE: age of the child at 1st grade assessment (months) . SES: an index of Socio-Economic Status (ranges from -4.75 to 2.5) READ5: 5-th grade reading score MATH5: 5-th grade math score The Table below provides the sample averages for these variables READ5 MATH5 MAGE AGE SES 139.7 109.7 26.88 68.53 0.72 This table shows the covariance of each pair of variables (the diagonal represents the variance of the variable) READ5 MATH5 MAGE AGE READ5 MATH MAGE AGE SES 587.6 361.2 26.38 8.3 3.53 361.2 500.9 19.93 10.7 3.06 26.38 19.93 24.83 0.86 0.86 8.3 10.7 -0.86 18.92 0.02 SES 3.53 3.06 0.86 0.02 0.29 Answer the following questions the regression model READ 0 + AMAGEit ui:

10. ) Null hypothesis states that coefficient of MAGE is statistically same as zero. When we calculate t stats of the coefficient, we get a value 16.38 whereas acceped value of t stats till which we can say coefficient is not significant is 2.33.

A larger t value shows that our coeeficient for MAGE is far from zero, menas not zero. Hence we reject Null Hypothesis.

Also, p value which says what is the probability of coefficient being same as zero is very low , lower than 0.01 also, which is our significance level 1%.

Had it been more than 0.01, we would have not been able to reject Null Hypothesis.

11.)

Null hypothesis states that coefficient of MAGE is statistically not same as zero, it is larger than zero. When we calculate t stats of the coefficient, we get a value 16.38 whereas acceped value of t stats till which we can say coefficient is not significant is - 2.33.

A larger t value shows that our coefficient for MAGE is far from zero, means not zero. Hence we fail to reject Null Hypothesis.

Also, p value which says what is the probability of coefficient being same as zero is very high ,higher than 0.01 also.

Had it been less than 0.01, we would have rejected Null Hypothesis.
